Bahrain’s goverment is planning to expand the use of sign language across government entities to make it easier for deaf and hearing-impaired people to access services and complete official transactions. The announcement came in response to a parliamentary proposal to establish a digital call centre offering sign language interpretation at government institutions.
The government said a national platform already provides 24-hour sign language interpretation in cooperation with the Bahrain Deaf Society. Plans also include expanding interpretation services across ministries, hospitals and emergency centres, training government employees in basic sign language, and increasing the use of the “Nasma’akum” app.
Additional support is available through the Ministry of Interior’s call centre for reporting incidents and problems, alongside specialised educational support for deaf students. The government confirmed that it will continue developing these services to improve communication and make government services more accessible.
