MPs Call to Extend Unemployment Fund Support to Fishermen, Drivers and More Workers

A group of MPs in Bahrain has proposed an urgent plan to extend government wage support for private sector workers during April using the Unemployment Insurance Fund. The proposal aims to include more affected groups such as professional fishermen, driving instructors, taxi drivers, and bus drivers. The MPs said these workers depend on daily or irregular income, making them more vulnerable during economic slowdowns or special circumstances. Fishermen were affected by restrictions on fishing during April and May, while driving instructors saw fewer students. Taxi and bus drivers also faced lower demand due to reduced movement.

The proposal highlights fairness in distributing government support and notes that many of these workers already contribute to the unemployment fund or are registered with social insurance. The MPs stressed that urgent action is needed as these groups are already facing immediate financial pressure.
