History Time! Here’s What Some of Bahrain’s Areas Really Mean

Ever wondered where the names of Bahrain’s areas come from? Behind every name lies a story one that reflects the island’s rich history, culture, and connection to the land. From pottery villages to ancient temples, each area’s name carries a piece of Bahrain’s heritage.

A’ali

A’ali was named because it is elevated compared to its neighboring areas. The name “A’ali” is attributed to its geographical location and natural elevation. A’ali is renowned for pottery making one of the oldest traditional crafts in Bahrain. The village lies within an archaeological zone that includes ancient burial mounds.

Bani Jamra

The name “Bani Jamra” comes from the settlement of the Bani Jamra tribe in the area. The tribe was known for practicing an old craft spinning and weaving. They used fire to fix dyes onto threads, which is where the name “Jamra” (meaning ember or fire) originates.

Hidd

The area was named “Al-Hidd” because it is a tongue of land that extends into the sea. In Arabic, the word “Hidd” refers to a strip of land jutting into the water. It was used by sailors and fishermen to appear prominently in the sea like a sword cutting through the waves.

Barbar

The name “Barbar” is believed to come from the Persian word meaning “Sultan of the temples.” Another theory links the name to the ancient Dilmun civilization. The village is home to the famous Barbar Temple, a significant archaeological site in Bahrain
