Update: MPs in Bahrain Propose 6 Month Rent Freeze for Shop and Factory Owners

Five Bahraini MPs have submitted an urgent proposal to provide significant financial relief for local business owners by freezing rent and lease payments for six months. This initiative specifically targets Bahraini citizens who own factories, industrial plots, and commercial shops located in properties managed by the government or municipalities. The proposal, led by MPs including Hisham Al Awadhi and Zainab AbdulAmeer, aims to waive industrial plot lease fees and municipal shop rents for half a year to help these businesses navigate the economic challenges caused by recent regional tensions.

The lawmakers highlighted that while trade has slowed and operating costs have risen due to exceptional circumstances, the fixed financial obligations for business owners have not stopped. Many small and medium-sized enterprises, such as craft shops and repair workshops, rely heavily on daily cash flow. By removing the burden of rent for six months, the MPs believe the government can provide the necessary “breathing space” for these establishments to stabilize their finances, protect local jobs, and avoid the risk of temporary or permanent closures. The proposal is now being reviewed as a vital step toward ensuring the continued resilience of Bahrain’s commercial and industrial sectors.
