Abu Dhabi Airport Is Set to Replace Passports and Boarding Passes With Facial Recognition

Biometric Abu Dhabi

Hello technology!

The days of passports and printing tickets are gone with this new technology emerging right now! The Abu Dhabi Airports have launched facial recognition tech enabling passengers to use their facial features as their passports and tickets!

This is great news as it reduces the time travelers spend while undergoing multiple passport and boarding pass checks before catching their flight!

Currently, biometric data is used at e-gates at Abu Dhabi airport but passengers must still present their passport. Photo: Next50

How do they work?

The smart cameras capture the facial features of the passenger and checks if they’re cleared to travel or not. The same information is used again later on to confirm boarding, which is when passengers usually need to show their documents again.

Is it available all around the airport?

Not yet, the technology is still being implemented in phases, and the first phase is currently being tested at the United States Customs and Border Protection facility in Abu Dhabi International Airport. Then, they’ll start the following phases and will be in the new Midfield Terminal.

Currently, people still need to use their passports as it’s still at trial. After the project is finalized, the airport will be the only one in the region with bio-metric solutions across the passenger touch points!
