Major Milestone! Captain (Dr.) Fares Led a Rare Knee Procedure, Marking a Medical First in Bahrain

Bahrain has marked a major medical milestone with the successful completion of a rare and complex knee surgery at King Hamad University Hospital. His Excellency Brig. Gen. Dr. Sheikh Fahad bin Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Commander of the Royal Medical Services, announced that the procedure combined a lateral meniscus transplant with ACL reconstruction for a Bahraini athlete. This achievement reflects the advanced skills of national medical teams and the cutting-edge capabilities available within the Royal Medical Services. It also highlights their ongoing commitment to using the latest medical technologies and supporting research that improves healthcare for athletes and patients across the Kingdom.

The surgery was led by Captain Dr. Fares Noor Uddin, Consultant in Sports Injuries and Upper Extremity Surgery. The athlete had been suffering from knee pain for more than four years due to the complete loss of the lateral meniscus after repeated injuries and surgeries. After being referred by the Bahrain Olympic Committee, the athlete underwent detailed assessments that confirmed the need for a meniscus transplant — the only option to protect the joint and prevent early-onset osteoarthritis. The successful operation marks a significant step forward for sports medicine in Bahrain.

What an Achievement!
