MPs in Bahrain Propose Tougher Penalties for AI Deepfakes, With Fines up to BD50,000

Five MPs in Bahrain have submitted a bill proposal to introduce tougher penalties for using AI to create or edit fake images, audio or videos that appear to be real and violate a person’s privacy. The proposal includes imprisonment and fines of up to BD30,000 for intentionally creating such content without legal justification. If the content is published, shared, circulated, or used for blackmail, threats, defamation or harm, the proposed penalty could reach up to five years in prison and a BD50,000 fine. The proposal was submitted by Dr. Hisham Al Asheeri, Mohsen Al Asbool, Jalila Al Sayed, Hanan Fardan and Basma Mubarak. The proposed penalties are not currently in effect and would require approval as part of an amendment to Bahrain’s Information Technology Crimes Law.

The proposed changes aim to strengthen privacy protections in the age of AI.
