A new development project is being planned for Sheikh Khalifa Street as part of efforts to reduce traffic congestion and improve traffic flow in the area. According to a knowledgeable source speaking to Akhbar Al Khaleej, the proposal includes building a second tunnel in Buri, along with other major road improvements. The initial plans also feature flyover bridges along Sheikh Khalifa Street, as well as a study to construct the new tunnel on the northern side of Buri. This would help create smoother connections with nearby roads and ease pressure on the current traffic network. MP Dr. Munir Suroor, the representative of the area, explained that the project falls under the Buri Detailed Master Plan, which is still in the coordination stage between relevant authorities. He noted that the project has already gone through additional technical reviews in preparation for approval and future implementation. Plans also include a major new intersection linking Buri with key areas such as Salmabad, Zayed City, and A’ali, as well as supporting development in Janabiya.
The proposed tunnel is expected to significantly ease congestion, as the existing tunnel has reached full capacity. A second, parallel tunnel would help improve traffic flow, reduce waiting times, and enhance road safety. Looking ahead to 2030, the wider vision for Buri also includes the King Hamad Metro Station, set to become the main hub of Bahrain’s future metro network, along with plans for the country’s largest fully air-conditioned central market supported by a modern logistics zone.
