Bahrain’s Bab Al Bahrain and Manama Municipality Building have been featured in the Arab Architectural and Urban Heritage Register, under the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO). The announcement was made during the 11th session of the Arab Observatory for Architectural and Urban Heritage, held at the Arab League headquarters in Egypt in October 2026.
The two buildings were recognised for their architectural value and their role in shaping Manama’s history and identity. Built in 1949, Bab Al Bahrain served as a gateway to the capital and the entrance to its historic souq. Manama Municipality Building represents Bahrain’s long history of municipal work. Established in 1919, Manama Municipality was the first municipality in the Gulf region. The restored building continues to preserve the history of this important institution.
The listing reflects Bahrain’s ongoing efforts to preserve its architectural heritage and highlight its cultural landmarks regionally and internationally.
