Update: Bahrain Announces Gradual Increase in Work Permit Fees for Expats Starting 2026

HRH Prince Salman has issued Edict (79) of 2025, introducing gradual changes to work permit and monthly fees for foreign workers in Bahrain. The decision was made following Cabinet approval and based on recommendations from the Minister of Labour and the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA). The new fees will come into effect from January 1, 2026, and will be applied gradually over four years, giving employers time to adjust. Under the new system, the annual work permit issuance or renewal fee will increase in stages, starting at BD 111 in 2026 and reaching BD 125 by 2029. Monthly fees for foreign workers will also rise gradually.

For the first five workers, the monthly fee will start at BD 7.5 in 2026 and increase to BD 30 by 2029. For additional workers beyond the first five, fees will begin at BD 12.5 and also reach BD 30 per worker by 2029. These fees cover a full range of services, including work permits, entry visas, residency permits, medical examinations, return visas, no-objection certificates, and ID cards. The annual fee will be charged based on the duration of the work permit issued by the LMRA. Any previous rules that conflict with this edict will be cancelled. All relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Labour and the LMRA, have been directed to implement the changes once they take effect in 2026.
