In recent days, shoppers noticed that all Al Muntazah Markets branches across Bahrain appeared to be closed — sparking discussion online about the future of one of the Kingdom’s oldest retail chains. Founded in 1984 with its first store in Muharraq, Al Muntazah has been a household name for decades. The brand grew to include 12 main branches and 2 express outlets, attracting over 8 million visitors a year. Over the years, the company invested more than BD 7 million into store renovations and new locations, including its branch in Diyar Al Muharraq.
However, increased competition from other retailers, the rise of online shopping, and changing market conditions have posed major challenges. Al Muntazah is owned by the Al Meer Group one of Bahrain’s oldest family businesses, established in the 1940s. While recent observations showed stores temporarily closed, data from Bahrain’s Sijilat registry confirms that some of the company’s licenses are still active. As of now, there’s been no official statement from management, leaving customers waiting for clarity on what’s next for the long-standing brand.
