The Shura Council has approved amendments to Bahrain’s Restorative Justice Law for Children and Their Protection from Abuse, aiming to strengthen the Child Protection Center’s role. The center, part of the Ministry of Social Development, will now have more authority to coordinate with the Restorative Justice Court and the Ministry of Interior when a child is placed under judicial supervision. The center will provide regular psychological and social support for both children and their families, playing a key role in following up on their well-being.
A new measure has also been introduced: restricting children’s access to certain websites for 2 to 12 hours daily. This is intended to protect them from the harmful effects of some online content and social media platforms. Lina Qassim, Chair of the Women and Children’s Affairs Committee, said the law aims to make the justice system more effective and child-focused. She stressed the importance of coordination between relevant authorities to support children’s best interests. Hisham Al-Qassab added that the changes reflect Bahrain’s efforts to keep up with modern challenges like cyberbullying and digital risks affecting children.
