Drive Easy! Bahrain Parliament Approves BD 128.6 Million for a Major Road Development Project

The Bahrain Council of Representatives approved a series of urgent laws, amendments, and proposals during a busy session held yesterday. One of the key decisions was the approval of a framework agreement to fund Phase Two of the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Street development project, with a total cost of BD 128.6 million. The project includes expanding the road to four lanes in each direction, constructing five flyover bridges, and upgrading Sheikh Salman Al-Fateh Street. Once completed, the development is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and increase road capacity. During the same session, the Council also urgently approved amendments to the pension law, increasing marriage grants for eligible beneficiaries. In the housing sector, MPs reaffirmed changes to the real estate registration law, which would exempt citizens from one-time registration and property transfer fees to support first-time homeownership.

In addition, the Council approved 10 proposals to be referred to the government, several of which were marked as urgent. These include plans to convert the Royal Hospital for Women and Children into a government maternity hospital, provide greater support for students diagnosed with ADHD, raise the housing benefit cap to BD 2,500, launch the “Tarmeem” national platform to renovate homes for low-income families, and grant housing allowances from the date of marriage. Other approved proposals aim to introduce after-school programs to reduce excessive use of smart devices, send alerts when electricity consumption reaches higher tiers, make it easier to register stalled real estate projects, fully recognise electronic traffic documents, and renovate the Bahrain Contemporary Art Association building.
