Bahrain’s new mandatory health insurance rules for expatriates came into effect on October 31, 2026, under Decision No. 66 of 2026 issued by the Supreme Council of Health. The insurance provides an annual treatment coverage limit of BD15,000 per insured person. Emergency treatment in Bahrain is fully covered, with no co-payment or deductible.
The coverage also includes:
- BD2,000 annually for pre-existing and chronic conditions.
- BD500 for outpatient medication.
- BD500 for natural delivery and BD800 for C-sections.
- Full coverage for newborn services during the first 30 days after birth.
- Cancer treatment up to the annual coverage limit.
- BD500 annually for outpatient dialysis.
The rules apply to expatriate employees in the private sector and eligible family members, including spouses and children under 25. They also cover certain non-Bahraini employers and workers authorised to work without an employer. Insurance contributions must be paid annually in advance. Residence and work permits cannot be issued or renewed until the required payment is made. Existing permit holders will be included when renewing their permits.
