Saudi Arabia has announced that Eid al-Adha 1445 will be on Sunday, June 16, 2024. This follows the sighting of the crescent moon, which means Dhū al-Ḥijjah 1445 starts on Friday, June 7, 2024.
Eid al-Adha, or the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is a major Islamic holiday. It honors Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. It also marks the end of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
Muslims worldwide will celebrate by praying, sharing meals, and sacrificing animals like sheep, goats, or cows. The meat is shared with family, friends, and those in need.
Saudi Arabia’s announcement is key because it hosts Mecca and Medina, making its lunar sightings important for Muslims everywhere. As we get ready for Eid, it’s a time for reflection, prayer, and community.
