Bahrain has officially approved major updates to its Traffic Law after the Shura Council passed a set of amendments aimed at tackling unsafe driving across the Kingdom. The new changes introduce stricter penalties for some of the most dangerous violations, including running red lights, speeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Penalties for manslaughter and accidental injury were also increased under updates to the Penal Code, reflecting a stronger stance on reckless behavior that puts lives at risk. As part of the reforms, the Council also raised the limit for fines that minor court judges and public prosecutors can issue through summary orders, helping streamline the handling of certain traffic-related cases.
Officials noted that the rise in reckless driving seen recently in Bahrain is unusual for the community and stressed the need for tougher deterrents to restore safety on the roads. They added that the new fines and penalties were set reasonably and were not exaggerated, ensuring they remain fair while still being effective. The public had been calling for stricter rules, and the updated law aims for a long-term goal of reducing fatal accidents to zero. Members of the Council also raised questions about “dash cam” recordings specifically how the new law will handle video evidence and whether these recordings will be officially recognized in traffic accident investigations.
