Behind the scenes of the most glamorous sport in the world
Formula 1, what started out as a pastime for rich, young Europeans has now evolved into a global sport with fans all over. Millions follow each event on the F1 calendar and millions of dollars are poured into the teams too. But, fans haven’t always been close to the action. Watch from the grandstand or maybe even get into the paddock and get a glimpse of the team and the car, but that was about as close you could get. Well, a Netflix documentary, ‘Drive to Survive’ is changing all of that.
‘Drive to Survive’, currently on its third season, follows the teams all competing to get to the top. And in their third season, Bahrain makes an appearance. The Bahrain Grand Prix, one of the only Middle Eastern mainstay fixtures on the F1 calendar and one of the biggest events in Bahrain is featured on the episode “Man on Fire”.
Man on Fire
The episode tells of the battle for supremacy over the course of two races, one of which was the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix. And how a crash brought on the Bahrain International Circuit shocked everyone.
Romain Grosjean, racing for Haas, was coming out of the second turn at the Bahrain International Circuit when he clipped the nose of another driver and went into the barrier. The next thing we see is the car engulfed in flames, with no sign of Grosjean. The documentary perfectly captures the mindset and feelings of everyone when he crashed. How, even though they are competing against each other, there exists a sense of camaraderie between the drivers.
28 seconds. 28 nail-biting seconds, from when he crashed, the car exploded into a fireball to when he then escaped, virtually unscathed.
Romain Grosjean is well and even racing in the IndyCar Series in the US.
