Bahrain Proposes Major Upgrade to Old Manama Car Park & Here’s What You Gotta Know

The vibrant heart of Old Manama could be set for a massive urban makeover. The Capital Secretariat Council has unanimously approved an exciting new proposal to transform a long-underused, open-air car park into a bustling, modern public square. The project aims to completely replace the current parking lot, which sits in a prime location opposite the InterContinental Bahrain and acts as a direct link between the historic Bab Al Bahrain and the Bahrain Financial Harbour. The proposed ‘midan’ will feature a lively mix of outdoor cafes, restaurants, antique shops, and open art spaces. The goal is to create an attractive, walkable cultural destination that draws in both tourists and residents. To make sure the area’s notorious traffic and parking issues aren’t made worse, the plan cleverly addresses congestion by moving the cars underground. A multi-story basement car park will be built directly beneath the new plaza. This frees up valuable surface space for pedestrians while maintaining plenty of room for vehicles. Council members view the project as a major step forward for smart urban planning. It successfully injects new economic and social life into the historic district, creating a beautiful bridge between Bahrain’s modern future and its deeply rooted heritage identity
