Art is subjective. But every artist needs to be given credit where credit is due. And Bahrain has no shortage of talented artists specializing in various mediums. So we thought we could shine a spotlight on some of these artists, in a segment called Local Artist in Spotlight. Our next feature? A member of Art Attack Krew, Faisal Mohammed a.k.a FMX.
Faisal Mohammed is a graffiti and digital artist. Let’s take a dive into his mind.

• Could you give our readers a general introduction about yourselves?
My name is Faisal Mohammed, aka “FMX” /Faisalmohammedx.Age 23, Bahraini, University student at Bahrain polytechnic as a marketing major. I’m an aspiring Graffiti and Digital Artist with a great passion to transform empty walls into beautiful art pieces. Many of my passion revolves around different forms of art such as graffiti, aesthetic ink art, developing eye-catching canvas spray paintings

• How and Why did you join Art Attack Krew?
I was always into art ever since elementary or maybe it just runs in the family because every one of my siblings draws and they into different types of art. But I started graffiti on 1st December 2012 when I got inspired by one of my senior friends named Yousef Kov during middle school. He was the first person in our school who did graffiti and I’ve been drawing graffiti ever since. After some self-teaching, I was known as the 2nd person in the school who does graffiti after him.
Over time, I developed my skills in sketching and transitioned to digital art. I decided to make a business account @faisal_artx where I do commissions of digital graffiti names. The names are made unique by inserting their interests or hobbies as well as experimenting with different colors and creating different variations. I always wanted to make something bizarre and amazing that everybody can enjoy. my friends were supporting me and kept on sharing my account on their feed. That is when the leader (Master Ayfu) of Art attack Krew noticed me and recruited me into the group.
Even though I always wanted to do graffiti on walls, I never did it. Ayfu motivated me and gave me a push to start painting on walls. So, I took the opportunity and went out with him to try my first graffiti on a wall on 29th Sept 2020. This is how my graffiti journey began.
Step by step, I started making multiple graffiti around Bahrain. Over time, I wanted to learn more forms of art such as spray painting on canvases. On the 23rd of June 21, I unlocked the skill to spray paint on canvases. It turned out to be so good and I was very satisfied with what I made. I hope to keep it consistent.
Through experience, I’ve found that there is always room for learning something new and improve. So never settle for less and always go for more. Try all types of art whenever you get the opportunity and focus on the one you really love.
I am very happy that I can finally be part of an art crew that allows me to develop my graffiti skills and expand my knowledge and abilities.
• Could you tell us a little about your process? How an idea ultimately becomes a finished piece?
At first, I make a sketch first and then work on walls or canvas. Usually, it takes me 1 hour or more to finish my graffiti. Sometimes it depends on my hand endurance otherwise I’ll keep it for the next day to complete it.
As for my digital art, I usually take 1 or more hours to complete my commissions. At first, it was hard because digital art it is easy when you have an Apple iPad which I didn’t have. however, I found an alternative way to do digital art, which was by sketching on Snapchat. Yes, on Snapchat. Then I used some editing apps to add special effects and include some of their interests or hobbies in the drawing. Finally, export it to a third-party editing app to enhance the quality of the picture.
For the spray painting on canvas, I gather all the materials I need in front of me to make it easier for me to visualize the final image. The materials include papers, bowls, plastics, spray cans, and few tools. It takes around 1 and half hours to finish it as it takes time for some parts to dry.
•What art/artist do you most identify with/admire?
Online, there are many artists that I look up to but the ones I look up to most are @Boogiesml (Boogie), @Sim0ndee (Simon Dee), and @Skechart88(Stefan). I also admire Bahraini artists such as Sarah (@popcornnoseart) for getting me interested in digital graffiti, my senior friend @kov94 (Yousif) from school who inspired me to start graffiti, and @ayfu.official (Aref Mohamed aka “Leader Ayfu”) for encouraging me to start painting on walls, develop new skills which gave me a new journey to start along with my art attack Krew members and other artists.
•What wouldn’t you do without?
My outdoor graffiti is dependent on spray cans, so those are my top necessary items for obvious reasons. Other artists like to utilize different mediums such as paintbrushes while doing working on outdoor graffiti. I also can’t do digital graffiti without the mobile stylus.
•What memorable responses have you had to your work?
I always recall my friends encouraging me and supporting me. I feel very grateful for having such an amazing support system that allows me to grow, become great and discover myself. You should always surround yourself with positive people. The best by far was having people approaching me and telling me that they feel inspired by my work and want to be learned from me.
•What’s the biggest obstacle you have run into while pursuing art?
Time management was the biggest issue for me. Currently, I am studying at university which makes it harder to make time for art and other hobbies because of all the assignments. Moreover, spray cans are expensive along with other materials. I often draw on my sketchbooks for practice as I’m saving up to buy the materials for my graffiti piece.

• هل يمكنك إعطاء قرائنا مقدمة عامة عنك؟
إسمي فيصل محمد، و معروف بعد بإسم “FMX” / فيصل محمد، عمري 23 عام، بحريني، طالب جامعي في بوليتكنك البحرين تخصص تسويق. أنا فنان طموح أحب الكتابة على الجدران و عمل الفن الرقمي وعندي شغف كبير في تحويل الجدران الفارغة إلى قطع فنية جميلة. محور شغفي كله حول رسم أشكال مختلفة من الفن مثل الكتابة على الجدران، و الفن الجمالي بالرسم بالحبر، وتطوير لوحات قماشية بالرذاذ لتصبح لافتة للنظر أكثر.

• كيف ولماذا إنضممت إلى Art Attack Krew
كنت دائمًا مهتم بالفن منذ أن كنت في المرحلة الإبتدائية أو يمكن بسبب توارثه في العائلة لأن كل واحد من أشقائي يرسمون أنواع مختلفة من الفنون. لكني بدأت الكتابة على الجدران في الأول من كانون الأول (ديسمبر) 2012 عندما إستوحيت الإلهام من أحد أصدقائي الكبار إسمه يوسف كوف أثناء المدرسة الإعدادية. كان أول شخص في مدرستنا يرسم الجرافيتي وأنا تعلمت رسم الغرافيتي منذ ذلك الحين. بعد بعض الدروس الذاتية، تميزت في المدرسة المدرسة و أصبحت الثاني في رسم الغرافيتي من بعده.
بمرور الوقت، طورت مهاراتي في الرسم وإنتقلت إلى الفن الرقمي. قررت إنشاء حساب تجاري faisal_artx حيث أقوم بتكليفات بكتابة الأسماء على الجدران الرقمية. تصبح الأسماء فريدة من خلال إدخال اهتماماتهم أو هواياتهم بالإضافة إلى تجربة ألوان مختلفة وإنشاء أشكال مختلفة. كنت أرغب دائمًا في صنع شيء غريب ومدهش يمكن للجميع الإستمتاع به. كان أصدقائي و مازالوا يدعمونني وإستمروا في مشاركة حسابي. كان ذلك عندما لاحظني قائد الفني للفرقة (Master Ayfu) Krew وقام بضمي إلى المجموعة.
على الرغم من أنني كنت أرغب دائمًا في رسم الغرافيتي على الجدران، إلا أنني لم أحضى بفعل ذلك. حفزني Ayfu وأعطاني دفعة لبدء الرسم على الجدران. لذلك، إنتهزت الفرصة وخرجت معه لتجربة كتاباتي الأولى على الجدران في 29 سبتمبر 2020. من هنا بدأت رحلتي في الكتابة على الجدران.
خطوة بخطوة، بدأت في رسم العديد من الرسوم الجرافيتية على الجدران في جميع أنحاء البحرين. بمرور الوقت، كنت أرغب في تعلم المزيد من أشكال الفن مثل الرسم بالرش على القماش. في 23 يونيو 21، فتحت الأفق لتعلم مهارة رش الطلاء على القماش. إتضح أنها جيدة جدًا و النتيجة كانت مرضية جدًا. آمل أن تكون على نفس النسق في المستقبل.
من خلال التجربة، وجدت أنه يوجد دائمًا مجال لتعلم شيء جديد وتحسينه. لذلك لا تقبل بالقليل و وجه نفسك للحصول على المزيد. جرب جميع أنواع الفن كلما سنحت لك الفرصة وركز على الفن الذي تحبه حقًا.
أنا سعيد جدًا لأنني أستطيع أخيرًا أن أكون جزءًا من طاقم فني يسمح لي بتطوير مهاراتي في الكتابة على الجدران وتوسيع معرفتي وقدراتي.
هل يمكن أن تخبرينا القليل عن طريقة عملك؟ و كيف تصبح الفكرة في النهاية قطعة متكاملة؟
في البداية، أقوم بعمل رسم تخطيطي أولاً ثم أعمل على الجدران أو القماش حتى. عادة، يستغرق الأمر ساعة واحدة أو أكثر لإنهاء الكتابة على الجدران. في بعض الأحيان يعتمد الأمر على قدرة يدي على التحمل وإذا لا أحتفظ بها لليوم التالي لإكمالها.

• ما هو الفن / الفنان الي تجد نفسك فيه / و تحترم فنه؟

تعتمد كتاباتي على الجدران الخارجية على علب الرش، لذا فهي تعتبرمن أهم العناصر الضرورية لديّ لأسباب واضحة. يحب الفنانون الآخرون إستخدام أدوات مختلفة مثل فرش الرسم أثناء العمل على الكتابة على الجدران في الهواء الطلق. لا يمكنني أيضًا الرسم الرقمي على الجدران بدون قلم الهاتف المحمول.
• ما هي الردود التي لم تنسها بخصوص عملك؟
أتذكر دائمًا تشجيع أصدقائي ودعمهم لي. أشعر بالإمتنان الشديد لإمتلاك مثل هذا الفريق المدهش و العظيم للدعم الذي يسمح لي بالنمو وإكتشاف نفسي. يجب أن تحيط نفسك دائمًا بأشخاص إيجابيين فالإيجابية معدية. أفضل ما في الأمر هو أن يقترب الناس مني ويخبرونني أنهم يشعرون بالإلهام بسبب عملي ويريدون التعلم مني.
• ما هي أكبر عقبة واجهتها أثناء سعيك وراء الفن؟
إدارة الوقت كانت أكبر مشكلة بالنسبة لي. أنا أدرس حاليًا في الجامعة مما يجعل من الصعب تخصيص وقت لعمل الفنون والهوايات الأخرى بسبب جميع المهام. علاوة على ذلك، فإن علب الرش غالية الثمن إلى جانب المواد الأخرى. غالبًا ما أعتمد على دفاتر الرسم الخاصة بي من أجل التدريب لأنني أوفر لشراء المواد اللازمة لقطع الغرافيتي الخاصة بي.
