During a recent meeting, MPs in Bahrain discussed a proposal to allocate pink parking spaces for women in public areas and shopping malls. The initiative, submitted by council member Wafa Ajour, aims to provide a safer and more convenient environment for women.
After discussion, the council decided to return the proposal to the technical committee for further study and possible amendments. Some members raised concerns about the plan. Council member Maytham Al-Hayki said allocating such spaces could worsen the capital’s already limited parking. He also noted that Bahrain is generally safe, and there is no urgent need for special parking, especially if it becomes mandatory for government institutions or hospitals.
Deputy Chairwoman Kholoud Al-Qattan added that the proposal could be misinterpreted as belittling women rather than offering a privilege. Huda Sultan suggested the service could be targeted to specific groups, such as pregnant women or the elderly, and should remain optional rather than imposed on business owners.
Mohammed Al-Tawfiq recommended withdrawing the proposal temporarily to allow for more study and research. The council agreed to send the proposal back to the technical committee to make necessary adjustments and evaluate its impact thoroughly before reconsidering it.
