Don’t Forget to Look Up! A Rare Planetary Conjunction Will be Visible in Bahrain Tonight

Tonight, sky watchers in Bahrain are in for a treat as a rare and spectacular celestial event takes over the night sky. Venus and Jupiter, the two brightest planets in our solar system, are coming together in a stunning planetary conjunction. From our perspective on Earth, they will appear so close to each other that they will look like they are almost touching in a beautiful “cosmic kiss.” It is important to remember that this breathtaking display is actually a massive optical illusion. While the two planets look like close neighbors from our view on Earth, they are actually separated by hundreds of millions of kilometers in deep space. Venus is relatively close to us, while the gas giant Jupiter sits much farther away. At their absolute closest tonight, the gap between them will be just 1.6 degrees which is roughly the width of a single pinky finger held out at arm’s length. This marks the closest alignment these two planets will have in our skies until late 2028, making it a must-see event for anyone who loves stargazing.

To catch the best view of this cosmic duo in Bahrain, simply look toward the west-northwest horizon about 45 minutes to an hour after sunset. You will not need a telescope or any expensive equipment to enjoy it, as both planets are incredibly bright and easily visible to the naked eye. Venus will shine as the brighter “star” on the right, with Jupiter sitting just to its lower left. Because they will be positioned low in the sky and will sink below the horizon within two hours of sundown, it is highly recommended to find an open viewing spot—like a beach or a high floor—away from tall buildings and trees that might block your view. If you happen to have a standard pair of binoculars handy, take them along; you will be able to see both planets in the same frame, and you might even catch a glimpse of Jupiter’s largest moons shining like tiny dots right next to it.
