Bahraini Citizens Head to Vote for Next Parliament in the Kingdom’s Biggest Election Yet

The biggest in the island’s history

Bahraini citizens are casting their votes today to elect members of the 40-seat lower house of parliament alongside the 30-member municipality council. With a record field of 561 candidates including 107 women, elections in 2022 are the largest in the island’s history. More women and young people are up for candidacy this year and Bahrainis including overseas, senior citizens, and covid patients have exercised their right to vote!

The next parliament will see at least eight new faces with seven candidates choosing not to appear for re-elections. A candidate must obtain more than half of the votes in a constituency to be elected.
