The Capital Secretariat Council has approved several proposals, including a smart carpooling initiative in Manama, mandatory liability insurance for demolition requests, and a property reclassification in Jidhafs. The smart carpooling project, proposed by Dr. Bashar Ahmadi, aims to reduce traffic congestion, lower air pollution, and cut commuting costs. A locally developed app will allow drivers and passengers to share daily trips, split fuel costs, and access real-time route updates. The first phase targets office workers, students, and government staff with regular schedules. Incentives for participation include free parking, fuel vouchers, and employer rewards, supported by national entities like Tamkeen and the Ministry of Transportation.
Safety measures include special insurance, same-gender ride options, and an emergency button in the app. The initiative draws on successful car-sharing systems in cities like San Francisco, Bangalore, Los Angeles, and Paris. A pilot phase will start in areas such as Seef or the Diplomatic District, with a nationwide awareness campaign under the slogan: “Save Fuel, Save Time, Save Bahrain.” Environmental and economic impacts will be reviewed after six months.
