Mp’s in Bahrain Approve Plan To Ban Plastic Bags for Hot Bread & Here Are the Deets

Bahrain’s Parliamentary Services Committee has approved a major proposal that will soon change how residents buy their daily bread. The new initiative requires all traditional and commercial bakeries across the Kingdom to stop packaging fresh, hot bread in plastic bags, mandating a switch to safer, environmentally friendly alternatives like paper bags. This decisive move aims to achieve two critical goals: safeguarding public health and significantly reducing plastic waste. Lawmakers strongly pushed for this legislative shift due to the hidden health risks associated with current packaging habits. When piping-hot bread—such as traditional khubz or tandoori roti—is placed directly into thin plastic bags, the intense heat causes the plastic to break down. This chemical degradation can cause harmful toxins to leach directly into the food, posing long-term health risks to consumers. By eliminating plastic at this crucial stage, the government is taking a proactive step to protect families, while simultaneously supporting Bahrain’s national strategy to curb single-use plastics and minimize environmental pollution.

Recognizing that this change will impact hundreds of local bakeries, the government is designing a supportive, gradual rollout strategy. Bakeries will be granted an official grace period, allowing them to exhaust their current stocks of plastic bags before making the permanent switch to food-grade paper. Furthermore, authorities are actively exploring financial support options and subsidized packaging alternatives for small-scale bakers. This ensures that operational costs do not spike and that the price of everyday staple bread remains completely unchanged and affordable for all consumers.
