“Expression: A Collection of Poetry by Reign” is a book that touches base on absolutely everything. Reign, 19, finished writing this book at just the age of 17 and has now, after almost 3 years, released the book for the public to see.
The book, according to Reign, is about the experiences of growing up and watching things and people around you whilst paying close attention to the details. Hence, he has turned this book into a reflection of himself, each chapter acting as somewhat of a polaroid of his life; chapters 1-3 being titled “Fifteen”, “Sixteen”, and “Seventeen”.
The book discusses everything from love and heartbreak to more taboo topics like assault, racism, capitalism, sexism, and more. He has also, for safety and inclusion, added a list of “trigger warnings” at the beginning of the book.
A cool thing about the book is that Reign was influenced by a lot of music around him. There are poems in the book inspired by songs, which were credited either by a mention of the song at the end of the poem, or the entire poem being titled after the song. Artists like Taylor Swift, Adele, and Miley Cyrus were credited after poems but Reign also added a lyric from a song in each chapter signifying the entire chapter’s “vibe”. Each chapter has one song lyric including Billie Eliish’s “Listen Before I Go”, Arjit Singh’s “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”, and Shawn Mendes’ “It’ll Be Okay”.
