Local Artist of the Week in Spotlight: Almas

Local Artist the Week

Art is subjective. But every artist needs to be given credit where credit is due. And Bahrain has no shortage of talented artists specializing in various mediums. So we thought we could shine a spotlight on some of these artists, in a segment called Local Artist of the Week In Spotlight. Our next feature? A member of Art Attack Krew, Almas.

Almas is a photo realism and impasto artist. Let’s take a dive into her mind.

Local Artist of the Week

• Could you give our readers a general introduction about yourselves?
I am an aspiring self-taught Bahrain based artist whose painting are based on photo realism , impasto techniques and imaginations beyond. Having grown up in a naturally scenic environment my artworks are inspired by intricacy and beauty of nature. I have been inspired by many renowned artists including my grand father.

• How and Why did you join Art Attack Krew?
Being impressed with  groups enthusiasm and mixed techniques in ATK groups Instagram page art works I joined  around 5 months back who have accepted and welcomed me as a crew member. Now that I am a part of it, I have got the opportunity to meet great young artists. We are always learning and sharing our artworks and appreciate or give feedback.

• Could you tell us a little about your process? How an idea ultimately becomes a finished piece?
I like to paint nature and realistic images. Day after day I would quietly unravel my thoughts and emotions and allow the whirlwind rush to settle into soft and purposeful brush strokes on the canvas in front of me. To create what I imagined. Sometimes when I am out of ideas I practise calligraphy, little by little improving in the process.

•What wouldn’t you do without?
Palette knife, no matter how many strokes I make with my paint brush I definitely like to use palette knife. It gives textures which cannot be defined.

•What memorable responses have you had to your work?
Recently I painted a piece, night view of Bahraini skyline. Positive comments and instant likes from all the friends.

•Who are two artists that you admire?
I admire artists like Claude Monet and Thomas Cole

•What role do you think art plays in society?
Art for me is all about expressing your thoughts through brush strokes. Even my kids enjoy exploring the paint and creating something or just playing with it. The mess they create is nothing compared to the happiness they have when they show me their completed art work. So yeah, art plays a major role in society its associated with expressions, happiness, calmness and many more unexplainable emotions.

Brava Almas! Brava!
