Local Artist of the Week in Spotlight: Samar Bushehri

Local Artist the Week

Art is subjective. But every artist needs to be given credit where credit is due. And Bahrain has no shortage of talented artists specializing in various mediums. So we thought we could shine a spotlight on some of these artists, in a segment called Local Artist of the Week In Spotlight. Our next feature? A member of Art Attack Krew, Samar Bushehri.

Samar Bushehri is a graffiti and SFX artist. Let’s take a dive into her mind.

Local Artist of the Week

• Could you give our readers a general introduction about yourselves?
I am Samar Bushehri, Bahrain’s first female graffiti artist and an SFX Makeup artist.
I’m Self-taught and currently started my new journey tutoring beginner artists. Graffiti to me is a way to spread awareness or express feelings around society in an artistic way. In addition to the above, I’m also a SFX (Special effects) makeup artist.

It’s not about the prosthetic part that I create a wound or a cut that I make; the distinctive part about it is that I am creating a whole new character whether it’s a monster, zombie or a fairy. It’s about creating a character with its own distinctive features.

• How and Why did you join Art Attack Krew?
Endless Thank You to our master (AYFU) for bringing this community together. ATK helped me express my values as an artist and create an elevated Sense of awareness and most importantly, I would love to highlight that this krew is setting community apart and attracting members to their uniqueness! With different type of artist from different cultures and various nationalities along with multiple Arts, we are brought together as one family and ultimately expanding our skills and knowledge is rewarding!

• Could you tell us a little about your process? How an idea ultimately becomes a finished piece?
As for me, I mostly hold my spray/ pencil blindly without any planned idea in mind, I always go with what my heart says depending on my mood, Ideas start to pop out and I keep on adding techniques until I come up with a pieces, I love adding colors to my pieces and I believe colorful pieces bring life to my graffiti. In the other hand, SFX to me is a whole different world. It’s something that goes beyond creativity, the freedom to go from burns to cuts and so on …
I also include my painting techniques into it and that’s interesting, to have the ability to make my own sculpt and colors.
The process of Going extremely deep into cuts and adding pieces like (glass, bones, and needels) is fascinating to me and that’s what makes my art different.

•What wouldn’t you do without?
Spray cans and fake blood for sure!!

•What memorable responses have you had to your work?
Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa (the crown Prince) by complementing my piece in the opening of ARTBAB exhibition moreover, Sh.Hala Al Khalifa for her kind words and support at Mall of Dilmunia. And finally my loving family and friends for their usual love and support.

•There is an old saying, “All good art comes from misery”. Do you agree?
I strongly agree. I believe that the greater the pain, the greater the art.
