These Bahrain Residents Rode Across the GCC through the Saudi-Oman Highway

Riding on an open road in the middle of towering desert dunes is an adventure seeker’s dream come true! And Amit Kumar would agree. Embarking on a journey like no other – Amit and his friend Anup Simon, both residents of Bahrain traversed the Rub el-Khali highway on their motorcycles!

The highway that connects Saudi Arabia to Oman officially opened in 2021 and stretches about 700 km! On both sides of the asphalted road is the world’s largest contiguous desert, promising a fascinating view! For Amit and Anup, adventure seekers looking to make the most of a post-pandemic era, the journey began at home in Bahrain. After reaching the Saudi border, they were on the ultimate experience of their lives!

“I’ve wanted to take a trip like this for very long,” Amit told LocalBH. “There was never a dull, boring moment during the ride. You’re passing through the largest desert in the world and it’s an experience worth having!” he added. The 35-year-old resident hailing from India gifted this journey to himself in March. And it took them from Bahrain to Saudi, then Qatar, Oman, and finally to UAE (where they made a quick stop at the Dubai Expo) – all over a span of 9 days, including touring the Arab countries he visited. Watch this video of the entire journey:

While Amit and Anup are going to cherish this experience for a lifetime, they’ve also got some tips for thrill-seekers like them, if you choose to experience a journey through the Rub el-Khali.

1. Preparation is a non-negotiable

It’s a desolate stretch with little to no signs of civilization. Carrying ample food for the road, and a few extra cans of fuel could save you a lot of the waiting time. “Help does arrive if you need it, but the nearest town is hundreds of kilometers away. So, it’s best to be prepared, service your vehicle, stock up on essentials, and arrange for extra fuel,” said Amit.

2. Have a Positive mindset

What’s an adventure without positivity? It’s important to keep a cool head while making your way across the highway. Amit said, “We were in constant communication with each other while riding, listening to music, and checking in every now and then. For us, it was a test of endurance and we’re proud that we came through!”

3. Watch out for sand on the road

With fine desert sand shifting onto the road, it’s important to stay alert if you’re closer to the speed limit. Amit recalled, “While riding under the hot sun, you might confuse the sand for a mirage. So we were on high alert, especially when the weather was windy.”

4. Make use of rest stops when you get the chance

Amit and Anup camped in different spots on the highway throughout their journey. A quick google map search showed them some of the available petrol pumps that had amenities for travelers like them. “The petrol station at Shayba is up and coming for travelers taking this route. We got to get adequate rest here, freshen up, and take a break from the riding before hitting the open road again” he said.

5. Show a little love to the Guides and Border Police

“You don’t see vehicles other than trucks and maybe a car here or there for most of the route. But the people you meet on the way will leave a mark on you!” Amit added. The journey is as welcoming and warm as it is adventurous. The biker recommends appreciating the Border Police and guides every chance you get, for their eagerly waiting for more people to venture onto the scenic highway!

The thrill doesn’t end here for Amit, who now seems confident to plan his next adventure through the African Highway, from Cairo to Cape Town!
