This Village in Italy Is Selling Houses for 400 Fils and We’re on Our Way!

Packing bags?

Italy’s town Maenza is located in the Latium region of Rome, high up on the wild Lepini hills, south of the capital. The town is drenched in history and dates back to the 1700’s, with all its ancient glory. In August, the Mayor of the region, Claudio Sperduti announced the launching of an ambitious “pact for the rebirth” of his hometown with the aim to bring a new life to the rather quiet alleys. How it’ll work? The vintage property will be recovered by liaising between old owners and new potential buyers, attracted by incredibly low prices, yeah 400 fils (€1) for the win!

The homes we’re talking about date back to the 1700’s with large rough dark gray stones with thick window frames and an arched entrance portal. Inside the houses are old tiles still on cracked walls, dusty chairs and wooden doors which hang off hinges. Fitted kitchenettes are rusting and broken. It’s like a whole ancient feel where Cinderella will have to do all the renovation, or maybe take help from the fairy godmother! Enjoy snacking on some gorgeous cherries while you’re at it!

Let’s talk about the process of grabbing one of these. It’s not that easy as it may seem, people who manage to buy a property in Maenza must commit to renovating it within 3 years and pay a deposit guarantee of €5,000 (approx BD 2200) that they will return once renovation works are completed.

Families willing to apply on semi-permanent basis are welcome and taking up residency is not compulsory. The first few houses on sale had an application deadline of August 28, but a new batch is being planned to put up (there are quite a lot of them).

Sounds like a fair option but tbh we’re fine here!
