Art is subjective. But every artist needs to be given credit where credit is due. And Bahrain has no shortage of talented artists specializing in various mediums. So we thought we could shine a spotlight on some of these artists, in a segment called Local Artist in Spotlight. Our next feature? A member of Art Attack Krew,Çağla Akpınar.
Çağla Akpınar a.k.a Wicked Rose is a multidisciplinary artist, muralist, and freelance art instructor. Let’s take a dive into her mind.
Local Artist in Spotlight
• Could you give our readers a general introduction about yourselves?
My name is Çağla Akpınar, I turn 27 this August, I am a multidisciplinary artist, muralist, and freelance art instructor from Ankara, Turkey a.k.a Wicked Rose. I graduated from Bilkent University Faculty of Art, Design, and Architecture where I got accepted with a full scholarship in 2018. Currently, I live in Bahrain and continue my art career here as a full-time artist.
• How and Why did you join Art Attack Krew?
The founder of ATK, Ayfu reached out on Instagram and he asked me if I would like to join his group where artists from any level share positive energy and learn from each other. And I accepted happily since I am an independent artist and work always solo; I thought it would be a great chance for me to experience working collectively by being a part of an art community.
• What’s your background? / Could you tell us a little about your process? How an idea ultimately becomes a finished piece?
I discovered that my interest in art has developed through the events of my upbringing, and the marks created in my psychology appear to me as the most profound drives of my passion. Correspondingly, the biggest inspiration for my art is daily life and my own experiences. When I got inspired, I create my artworks with mixed mediums and I like doing portraits and figures. I do not have stable and repeating techniques and styles; my artworks can show so many varieties. I like doing my artworks with mixed techniques by bringing different materials together such as; charcoal, color pencils, marker, ink, watercolor, acrylic paints on canvases, or different types of papers. Moreover, I really enjoy adding some collage techniques to my works.
•What art/artist do you most identify with/admire?
I have so many of them! But to mention briefly, some of my favorite artists are Spanish Illustrator Luis Quiles, Mural artist Pichiavo, Visual Artist Tishk Barzanji…And I can definitely say that I am a fan of American photographer Cindy Sherman.
•What memorable responses have you had to your work?
In 2018, Jerry Saltz, Senior Art Critic for New York Magazine, shared one of my artwork which was related to gender issues that I drew with sarcastic language on his Instagram for a couple of days! I got a lot of positive feedback from his followers, important artists, and of course from him and it was just a magical moment that made me very proud of myself.

•What do you hope to achieve from your art?
I believe that raising a good generation is one the most crucial point to solve gender-culture-religion-related problems. Therefore, I like to work at art courses to leave a mark on children and teenagers, even adults throughout my art and myself. I don’t have to do something big – art brings people together, it allows you to open your mind, your heart and lets you being yourself at the moment. This creative process allows people to observe, compare and judge. In those moments, I always hope to be a good role model to sparkle on their mind and heart.
I want to transform my art to reach out to people as more than just visuals. My talent is a huge channel that I utilize to take action and to change. Where my art is not enough to speak, as an artist I draw a self-image about myself to find the middle ways in so many conditions.
Correspondingly, I hope to achieve doing my master’s degree in the future since I want to be an academician alongside being an artist to raise awareness in society about how to cultivate for yourself to understand you are not here just to satisfy people’s expectations – I want them to accept and respect the differences. I want my art to create a voice for the new generation that stops defining their value with their body and appearance in any aspect. That is why I hope to become my best version and keep fighting for women, dreamers, young artists, and humanity.

• كيف ولماذا انضممتي إلى Art Attack Krew؟
مؤسس ATK ، Ayfu تواصل على الInstagram وسألني إذا كنت أرغب في الانضمام إلى مجموعته حيث يشارك الفنانون طاقتهم الإيجابية من أي مستوى ويتعلمون من بعضهم البعض. وقد قبلت بسعادة لأنني فنانة مستقلة وأعمل دائمًا بمفردي؛ اعتقدت أنها ستكون فرصة رائعة لي لتجربة العمل الجماعي من خلال أن أكون جزء من مجتمع فني.
• ما هي خلفيتك؟ / هل يمكن أن تخبرينا القليل عن طريقة عملك؟ و كيف تصبح الفكرة في النهاية قطعة متكاملة؟
اكتشفت من خلال نشأتي أن اهتمامي بالفن قد تطور، و العلامات التي تشكلت في نفسي تعتبر هي الدافع الأكبر لشغفي. في المقابل ، أكبر مصدر إلهام لفني هو حياتي اليومية وخبراتي الخاصة. عندما أحصل على الإلهام ، أصنع أعمالي الفنية بوسائل مختلطة وأحب رسم الصور والأشكال. لا أتبع تقنيات وأساليب مستقرة ومتكررة؛ يمكن أن تظهر أعمالي الفنية العديد من الأشكال. أحب عمل أعمالي الفنية بتقنيات مختلطة من خلال الجمع بين المواد المختلفة مثل ؛ الفحم ، وأقلام الرصاص الملونة ، وأقلام التحديد ، والحبر ، والألوان المائية ، ودهانات الأكريليك على لوحات الكانفس ، أو أنواع مختلفة من الأوراق. علاوة على ذلك ، أستمتع جدا بإضافة بعض تقنيات الكولاج إلى أعمالي.
• ما هو الفن / الفنان الي تجدين نفسكِ فيه / و تحترمين فنه؟
أعرف الكثير منهم! ولكن بإيجاز، من بعض الفنانين المفضلين عندي هم الرسام الإسباني لويس كويلز، وفنان الجداريات Pichiavo، والفنان التشكيلي تيشك برزنجي … ويمكنني بالتأكيد أن أقول إنني من محبين المصورة الأمريكية سيندي شيرمان.
• ما هي الردود التي لم تنسيها بخصوص عملكِ؟
في عام 2018، شارك كبير النقاد الفني لمجلة نيويورك، جيري سالتز، أحد أعمالي الفنية المتعلقة بقضايا النوع الاجتماعي التي رسمتها بلغة ساخرة على الإنستغرام الخاص به لبضعة أيام! تلقيت الكثير من ردود الفعل الإيجابية من متابعيه وفنانين مهمين ومنه بالطبع وكانت هذه اللحظة سحرية و جعلتني فخورة بنفسي.
Art Attack Krew: واحد للجميع والجميع للواحد
• ما الذي تتمنين أن يتحقق من خلال فنكِ؟
من النقاط الأكثر أهمية أ للقضاء على المشاكل المتعلقة بالجندر والثقافة والدين هي أن نربي جيل واعد لحل جميع هذه المشاكل. لذلك، أحب العمل في دورات فنية لترك بصمتي الخاصة على الأطفال والمراهقين، حتى الكبار منهم من خلال فنّي وشخصيتي. لست مضطرة لفعل شيء كبير – الفن يجمع الناس على قلب واحد، ويسمح لك بفتح عقلك وقلبك ويسمح لك أن تكون على طبيعتك في اللحظة نفسها. هذي العملية الإبداعية تسمح للناس بالإنتباه والمقارنة والحكم. في هذه اللحظات ، آمل دائمًا أن أكون قدوة جيدة متألقة في أذهانهم وقلوبهم.
أرغب في تحويل فني ليصل إلى الناس على نحو أكثر من عناصر مرئية. موهبتي هي قناة ضخمة أستخدمها لإتخاذ الإجراءات للتغيير. فني يعبر عن نفسه ، بصفتي فنانة أرسم صورة ذاتية عن نفسي لأجدها تحت العديد من الظروف.
في المقابل ، آمل أن أحصل على درجة الماجستير في المستقبل لأكون أكاديمية معروفة إلى جانب كلمة فنانة لرفع مستوى الوعي في المجتمع حول كيفية تنمية وصقل نفسك لفهم أنك لست هنا فقط لإرضاء توقعات الناس – أريدهم أن يتقبلوا ويحترموا الاختلافات. أريد من فني أن يخلق صوت واعد للجيل الجديد ويمنع فكرة تحديد قيمتهم من خلال جسدهم ومظهرهم. لهذا السبب آمل أن أقدم أفضل نسخة مني وأواصل الكفاح من أجل النساء والحالمين والفنانين الشباب والإنسانية.
